About Electro-Galvanised Steel

Electro-Galvanised Steel is a type of steel that has been electrolytically coated with zinc for protection. It is primarily used for commercial purposes, oftentimes for applications like office furnishings and light fixtures. However, it is also used abundantly within the Australian automotive industry.

The Benefits of Electro-Galvanised Steel

One advantage of Electro-Galvanised Steel is that it has a higher level of thickness control, which provides impressively accurate results. It is also ideal for making smaller components.

The finished product always has a shinier and more vibrant finish than the hot-dipped version. The sheet’s surface weldability is especially appreciated for spot and seam welds.

Impact Steel can offer you a strong and durable Electro-Galvanised product, appropriately suited to your construction or manufacturing projects.

Specific Uses and Applications of Electro-Galvanised Steel

Electro-Galvanised Steel is best suited to processes involving slight bending, and deep drawing.  A close relation to standard galvanised steel, Electro-Galvanised Steel has been ‘zinc electroplated’.

Electro-Galvanised Steel is widely used for interior applications due to its superior performance within unexposed environments. It has a more suitable grey/silver appearance, which makes it a match for applications required to fit a specific presentational criteria.  These attributes are very attractive to consumers, which has led to increasing demand for Electro-Galvanised Steel.

Electrolytic versions also have a uniform coating that is ideal for electrical appliances. This coating can even resist the most trivial markings like fingerprints. There is a significantly lower possibility of structure deformation or distortion with this product.  Our Electro-Galvanised Steel product range is ideal for manufacturing applications and exhibit excellent formability. Typical applications of Electro-Galvanised Steel include:

  • Exposed painted panels
  • Non-exposed automotive panels
  • Washing machines
  • Acoustic ceiling tiles
  • Door frames
  • Switchboards
  • Commercial refrigerators and freezers

Below, we’ll explain several factors that differentiate regular, hot-dipped galvanised steel, and zinc electroplated galvanised steel.

The Difference Between Galvanised and Electro-Galvanised Steel

  • Regular Galvanised steel is dipped into a molten zinc bath, electro-galvanised steel is coated using electric current (immersion vs. electroplating application).
  • Electro-Galvanisation results in a much thinner, but more uniform protective coating.
  • Electro-Galvanised steel is superior in resisting abrasions.
  • Electro-Galvanised steel has a more vibrant appearance with better colour consistency.
  • Electro-Galvanised steel is suited for interior purposes. Hot-dipped is best for outdoors – as it can stand harsher conditions.
  • A more even surface is considerably noticeable in an Electro-Galvanised steel final product
